Willem Claesz Heda (December 14, 1593 or 1594 – August 24, 1680 or 1682) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, known for his still lifes. He made his mark in art history by creating an original variety of “breakfast still lifes” – depictions of set tables with precise reproductions of the color and texture of expensive objects, as if they had happened to end up on the table accidentally: crystal and silverware, porcelain, jewelry. By the mid-1600s, still life paintings took on greater symbolic meaning, as artists assigned biblical significance to everyday objects. Grapes and apples evoked Christ's blood and devotion to the church; the lobster, with its reddish hue, became an emblem of his resurrection. Through meticulous arrangement and calculated color schemes, painters infused religiosity into mundane fruits and vegetables, using produce to relay parables and impart moral lessons.
